Tequila’s Winter Pairing: An Unexpected Delight

When the chill of December sets in, most people turn to mulled wines or hot toddies to warm their spirits. But tequila, particularly aged varieties like Reposado and Añejo, offers a surprisingly rich and versatile companion to winter’s flavors and festivities. At the Art of the Cocktail, we embrace this bold spirit for our December events, showcasing how tequila can transform the holiday season.

Why Tequila for December?

Tequila’s depth of flavor evolves as it ages. Reposado tequila, aged for at least two months in oak barrels, carries a smooth balance of vanilla, caramel, and herbal notes. This makes it an excellent choice for cocktails that bridge the bright, citrusy flavors of summer with the warming spices of winter. Meanwhile, Añejo tequila, aged for one to three years, boasts rich notes of toffee, chocolate, and dried fruit, perfect for crafting decadent, warming cocktails.

Our December Art of the Cocktail classes reflect these qualities. Tomorrow, December 10th, we’ll highlight Reposado tequila, teaching participants how to craft winter cocktails that bring out its nuanced flavors. And on December 20th, our Añejo event will delve deeper into this luxurious spirit, pairing it with flavors that evoke cozy firesides and festive celebrations.

Pairing Tequila with Winter

  1. Citrus and Spice
Tequila’s natural citrus undertones pair beautifully with winter flavors like blood oranges and Meyer lemons. Adding spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg elevates these combinations, creating cocktails that are both refreshing and warming.

  2. Chocolate and Coffee
Añejo tequila’s rich profile complements chocolate-based drinks or desserts. Try pairing it with a touch of espresso for a modern Mexican mocha martini—a favorite during our classes.

  3. Herbs and Roots
Earthy tones from rosemary or ginger harmonize with tequila’s agave base, adding complexity to cocktails and appetizers alike.
